Chief Minister calls for holistic approach at IWC ’24

Addressing attendees, Sangma highlighted the imperative of interdepartmental collaboration, stating, "We sometimes lose track of what is the real purpose of the state? What is it that we are trying to achieve? And this is what triggered the thought process of this conference that we have today."

SHILLONG:

The International Water Conclave 2024 commenced today in Shillong, marking the beginning of a two-day event aimed at addressing pressing water-related challenges. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, inaugurating the conclave, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach towards water management.

Addressing attendees, Sangma highlighted the imperative of interdepartmental collaboration, stating, “We sometimes lose track of what is the real purpose of the state? What is it that we are trying to achieve? And this is what triggered the thought process of this conference that we have today.”

Sangma outlined the broader objectives of the conclave, emphasising the significance of collective action among different departments, states, and countries to address water-related issues effectively. “We need to keep our eye on the ball…and hence, a holistic approach is required,” he said.

He underscored the imminent threat posed by climate change and its impact on water resources, calling for proactive measures.

Acknowledging support from the JAL Shakti ministry and the central government, Sangma expressed gratitude for their assistance in realising various water-related initiatives in Meghalaya.

He outlined the state’s endeavours, including the implementation of a holistic water policy and the establishment of water committees in every village to address grassroots-level concerns.
