Court allows rearrest of Bernard for extortion, hiking up food prices

TURA

The brief respite from police custody given by the court to BJP MDC from Tura Bernard N Marak alias Rimpu is coming to an end on August 31 morning with police once again being given permission to take him back into custody for his involvement in extorting money from traders and hiking up prices of food items through his Meghalaya Chamber of Commerce organisation.

The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Tura on Tuesday allowed police to arrest Bernard in the latest case related with the activities of the Meghalaya Chamber of Commerce.

Despite initial claims by the Meghalaya Chamber of Commerce self-styled president Wilver Danggo, who is a close aide of the arrested BJP leader, that Bernard is not connected to the trade body, police recovered a document of the group where it shows Bernard as the adviser of the organisation.

“He (Bernard) will be arrested tomorrow from Tura jail and forwarded to court,” confirmed West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore.

Meanwhile, the self-styled president of the Meghalaya chamber of commerce and BJP leader Wilver Danggo has reportedly gone into hiding to avoid being arrested, inform police.

He is wanted for allegedly pushing traders to raise prices of food meant for the public and also for demanding money in the form of commissions.
