Education system must focus on rural students: Meghalaya Speaker

The Speaker said that the conference would allow participants to put forward their ideas and inventions and be contributors to the upliftment of the society.

NONGPOH:

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, on August 5, said that educational conferences and functions must focus on students from rural areas rather than only focusing on students from urban areas, who already have access to modern technology.

“The students of the rural areas need more attention than the students in the urban areas as students in urban areas already have access to new technologies,” Lyngdoh said while inaugurating a two-day long international conference on Innovation in Management, Science & Technology at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

The seminar was organised by the department of Computer Science and Electronics, USTM, in collaboration with the American Institute of Management and Technology (AIMT) and supported by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (USA).

Lyngdoh applauded the efforts of USTM in providing underprivileged students with free education and appreciated the facilities provided by the university. He also expressed his delight on seeing the world-class facilities at USTM, and seconded the hope that the vice-chancellor has in seeing USTM climb ladders of international acclaim.

The Speaker said that the conference would allow participants to put forward their ideas and inventions and be contributors to the upliftment of the society.

“Technology is the heart of human progress in today’s world and we should embrace it with both hands. The modern world that we see is all because of technology,” the speaker said.

The speaker shared a personal experience on how technology has reached even the remotest corners of the world, recalling a text message he received from a friend who lives in a very remote area.

Stating that computerisation of offices, educational institutes and other departments has made the life of people easier, Lyngdoh also touched on subjects like data science, artificial intelligence, which will transform the world in the coming days. He also listed some benefits of robotic process automation in interpreting applications, processing transactions, dealing with data and receiving emails.

Giving an example of how India has become a business destination for technology transactions in the world, he said that economic challenges can be tackled using technology.

The speaker concluded that there are challenges too like setting up the science and technology framework to drive the Indian economy to greater heights in the future.

The conference will see delegates and participants from 15 countries participating in 25 sessions, and about 200 research papers to be presented through offline and online mode by scholars from India and abroad.

In his address, Dr Deva D Sharma from Global Knowledge Foundation (GKF), USA stated that the conference will provide the scholars an opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

Dr HS Hota, Atal Bihari Vajpayee University, Bilaspur, delivered his address as chair of the session. Prof Dinesh Kumar Sharma from Maryland University also addressed the session.
