NEW DELHI:
Basdeo Panday, the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, known for his memorable quote, “If you see me and a lion fighting, feel sorry for the lion,” has passed away at the age of 90.
A multi-faceted individual, Panday served as Prime Minister from 1995-2001, wearing various hats such as a lawyer, trade unionist, economist, actor, and politician. He died on New Year’s Day, surrounded by family. His daughter, Mickela Panday, announced the news on Facebook, describing him as a fighter with wit and humour.
Panday, a 2005 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman recipient, is survived by his wife and four daughters. Born in 1933, he co-founded political parties, including the United National Congress, and faced political challenges, notably being accused of corruption in 2005.
Trinidad and Tobago President Christine Kangaloo praised him as a “giant of a man,” while Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar expressed gratitude for his influence on her life. A religious celebration was held posthumously, honouring Panday’s legacy.
