A lab technician has been accused of selling unprescribed drugs, including anti-malarial drugs, without proper prescription or authority. Despite warnings from the drug inspector of the West Jaintia Hills district, such individuals have reportedly continued to engage in unethical practices.

JOWAI:

The illegal sale of medicines by unauthorised individuals in the Dawki and Skhentalang areas has become a cause for concern among locals.

Adding to this, a lab technician has been accused of selling unprescribed drugs, including anti-malarial drugs, without proper prescription or authority. Despite warnings from the drug inspector of the West Jaintia Hills district, such individuals have reportedly continued to engage in unethical practices.

Sources warned that unauthorised sales of medicines can lead to dangerous consequences, as sellers are not trained or qualified to dispense medication. They may not have the knowledge to identify the correct medication for a particular ailment, leading to improper treatment, complications, and worsening of the condition. Furthermore, there is a risk of counterfeit medicines being sold, which can be life-threatening.

Besides, selling unprescribed drugs without proper investigation can have severe consequences, including adverse reactions and the development of drug resistance.

The authorities have taken note of these incidents and have launched an investigation into the matter. The government is taking steps to raise awareness among locals of the dangers of purchasing medicines from unauthorised sources and the importance of seeking medical advice before taking any medication.

The drug inspector of the district has issued a stern warning to those engaged in the illegal sale of medicines. However, it is disconcerting to note that, despite these warnings, individuals continue to flout the law and put people’s health at risk. It is imperative that strict action is taken against those involved in such unethical practices, and they are held accountable for their actions.

A senior resident of Skhentalang said that the health and well-being of the people must be given the highest priority, and any illegal activities that put their health at risk must be dealt with firmly. The government must ensure that medicines are only sold by authorised individuals and that they are prescribed and administered correctly. It is crucial to take swift and effective action to prevent the misuse of medicines and protect the health of the people in the Dawki and Skhentalang areas.
