KSU asks Dy CM to provide for 3-yr-old for life

SHILLONG:

The Khasi Students’ Union, on June 10, submitted a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong requesting the government to provide for the three-year-old, who lost both her arms after being electrocuted, for life.

A delegation, led by the president of the union’s South West Khasi Hills District Forwardman Nongrem, sought Tynsong’s intervention in the matter.

“We also demand the state government to provide all the expenses for the on-going treatment at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS),” he said.

Nongrem also said that the unfortunate incident was a result of negligence on the part of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL), which had failed to fence the transformer located near a school in the village.

Earlier on April 21, 2020, the child, Ibapynhun Iawphniaw, daughter of Katbina Iawphniaw and Synsharlang Syiemlieh, residents of Mawkohphet, South West Khasi Hills, was injured after being electrocuted. Currently, she is undergoing treatment at the orthopaedic department of NEIGRIHMS without any help from any quarters.

Nongrem further informed that the union has requested the deputy chief minister to ensure that monthly assistance is extended to the child besides providing free treatment.

The Union also demanded the deputy chief minister to direct the MePDCL to conduct a survey of all unfenced transformers in the district, and the state as a whole.

“They should fence all transformers, especially those near open spaces in order to prevent such incidents in the future,” the union president said.
