MeECL files review petition before RC over power tariff

Managing Director of the Corporation Sanjay Goyal told reporters on June 13 that what the chief minister Conrad K Sangma had mentioned recently is a fact that there are certain issues about the determination of the tariff for certain categories of consumers.

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has filed a review petition before the regulatory commission seeking a revision in the power tariff.

Managing Director of the Corporation Sanjay Goyal told reporters on June 13 that what the chief minister Conrad K Sangma had mentioned recently is a fact that there are certain issues about the determination of the tariff for certain categories of consumers.

“According to the Corporation, we are not convinced about that level of tariff, which has been fixed. So there are certain procedures which need to be followed. Therefore, we are filing the review petition before the regulatory commission…I am sure we will get some relief from the commission,” he said.

On June 6, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while expressing concern over the issue related to the rates had said that the State does not have full power to determine the rates that are being charged by the MeECL since the same is being determined by the regulatory commission.

According to him, due to this consumers are paying more than the industries. The consumers are paying power at the rate of Rs 6 whereas industries at Rs 5.

“These are rates that are being set up by the regulatory commission despite repeated requests that the industries should pay more. We have not got a positive result or a response from them so we are still working with them and we are trying to resolve these issues and also the rates that are being charged from consumers is much lower compared to the cost that MeECL is bearing today.

Hence, these things have to be changed if we want to see any kind of long term improvement in the financial health of the MeECL,” the CM had stated.
