NEHU students to get buses on weekends

The protest, which lasted for an hour, was later called off after the assistant registrar in-charge transport Ivan Lyngdoh assured to comply with the demand put forth by the union.

SHILLONG:

The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) on August 5 staged a protest against the failure of NEHU administration to provide buses for students who are appearing for their examination.

The protest, which lasted for an hour, was later called off after the assistant registrar in-charge transport Ivan Lyngdoh assured to comply with the demand put forth by the union.
“Lyngdoh issued an apology to the student community for the inconvenience caused and further declared that henceforth, weekend buses shall be provided as per the NEHUSU’s demand,” finance secretary of the union, Mandor Diengdoh Swer, said in a statement issued after the protest.

Swer further said that the union also demanded provision of weekend buses for students, especially the hostellers for their commute to and from the campus on the weekends.
“…given that hostellers too bear the same expense of bus fare as off-campus students, they too should be provided with buses to commute within the city,” he added.

“Furthermore, today’s protest is also a reminder to the administration not to toy with the student community and also a preview of what is to come if the charter of demands (improved Wifi,24×7 library, among others) as discussed with the vice-chancellor several months ago is not met in the coming days,” Swer said.
