Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem warns of UCC’s threat to State’s culture

Mayralborn Syiem underlined his opposition to the UCC, claiming that it would be unsustainable for the state and accused the central government of a dangerous hidden agenda.

NONGPOH:

Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh, expressed his concerns about the Central Government’s readiness to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Parliament. Implementing the UCC, he claims, would imply having only one law for the entire country of India. He went on to say that this might be a serious threat to the state’s culture and traditions.

Additionally, Syiem mentioned that the quality of the Bill is still unknown since the central government, led by the BJP, has not shared the details of the Bill with the public or the Parliament. He emphasised that without the Bill being introduced in Parliament, they cannot decide whether to support or oppose its inclusion in the UCC. Personally, he indicated his unwillingness to embrace the UCC if it were implemented, and he called for conversations among state Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs to address the Bill’s objectives and potential consequences on the state’s distinctiveness.

Syiem underlined his opposition to the UCC, claiming that it would be unsustainable for the state and accused the central government of a dangerous hidden agenda. During the deliberations on this topic, he asked the delegates to work together to defend the state’s specialty.
