SHILLONG:
Meghalaya’s tourist taxis have come to a standstill, embarking on a 48-hour strike from today.
The protest is in response to the impending enforcement of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which proposes increased penalties for hit-and-run offences.
Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh, addressing the media during a mural inauguration, emphasised the nationwide significance of this issue.
He stated, “This is a matter of concern not just for Meghalaya but the entire nation, given the surge in reckless driving cases and instances where drivers have flouted the law.”
Minister Lyngdoh highlighted the widespread nature of the protest, stating, “This movement is happening across the country. The free flow of tourists is crucial nationwide, and Meghalaya is not acting in isolation. Our measures must align with the entire country’s stance on this matter.”
