Time to introspect: Rituraj Sinha on BJP’s poll debacle in Meghalaya

Speaking to media persons in the city, Sinha said the question of ‘why’ and ‘how’ the party plans to further strengthen its presence in Meghalaya is a matter of introspection.

SHILLONG:

National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rituraj Sinha, on April 3, said that the party will introspect and do a post-mortem investigation into the dismal performance of BJP in the recently concluded assembly polls in Meghalaya.

Speaking to media persons in the city, Sinha said the question of ‘why’ and ‘how’ the party plans to further strengthen its presence in Meghalaya is a matter of introspection.

Contended with the results, the BJP leader said that the party has accepted the mandate of the people of Meghalaya, even if it means winning just two seats from the 60 seats that the party fielded candidates in.

Furthermore, he said the support that BJP has got from the people of Meghalaya has grown since 2018.

“A large number of people have joined the BJP in the state, and the support that we have got is amazing. The kind of crowds that have turned out for BJP events show their love for the party; so obviously our support base has grown,” Singha reacted to the question on the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded assembly polls despite aggressive campaigns.

To a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment on Meghalaya being the most corrupt state, Sinha said that as elections are over, it’s time to ensure the best possible, stable government in Meghalaya.

“Meghalaya has a lot of developmental challenges; the state’s finance is going through a crisis, and it is for the central and state governments to come together to find a solution for the people of Meghalaya which is our current priority (sic),” Sinha said.

Asked if the BJP is planning to remove Earnest Mawrie as state party president after the recent poll debacle, Sinha said that there is no conversation in this regard at this point of time.

“The National President of BJP JP Nadda is authorised to take the decision and at the right time when such things come up, such a decision will be taken.”
