VAC arrests Assam government official for demanding bribe

GUWAHATI:

An upper divisional assistant (UDA) of a secondary school was arrested by sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (VAC) department for accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a teacher in Lower Assam’s Dhubri district on August 18.

“Relentless campaign. Jatindra Nath Roy, UDA of Hadurhat Dharmasala HS School, Dhubri district has been trapped and arrested red-handed today by a team of @DIR_VAC_ASSAM while accepting demanded money for transferring the complainant’s service sheet and LPC,” Special DGP GP Singh tweeted.

According to a statement from Assam police, Roy had demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a teacher for transferring the Service book and LPC (last pay certificate) from the earlier place of posting to the recent place of posting. Unwilling to pay the bribe the complainant had approached the VAC for help in taking legal action.

The VAC accordingly laid a trap inside his office at Hadurhat Dharmasala HS School where Roy was caught at about 1:30 pm. The bribe money was seized from Roy in the presence of independent witnesses.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against Roy at ACB police station under section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), and further search is being carried out.
