Yet another encounter: Drug peddler shot at by Assam police in Kokrajhar

The person, identified as Sanjit Kumar, 23, was arrested after police seized 685 kg of marijuana, concealed in 70 packets in his vehicle.

GUWAHATI:

Adding yet another incident to the already burgeoning list of police encounters in the state, the Assam police shot a suspected drug peddler on his leg at Serfangguri in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district, on January 25.

The person, identified as Sanjit Kumar, 23, was arrested after police seized 685 kg of marijuana, concealed in 70 packets in a secret chamber inside a Nagaland registered vehicle (NL01Q8878) from the area around 6:40 pm on January 24. Kumar was driving the vehicle, the police said.

“We fired on the accused when he tried to snatch a pistol belonging to one of our police personnel. He received bullet injuries on his right leg and was immediately shifted to Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital. Later, he was referred to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital,” read a statement issued by the police. Kumar, who hails from Bihar, confessed to taking the contraband consignment from Guwahati to his native state.

The statement also added how some unidentified anti-social elements later set the seized vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene. Fire tenders were called in immediately to douse the flames, the police informed.
