SHILLONG:

Five persons were arrested, on May 19, by the police from Guwahati, in connection with the assault on two local taxi drivers by miscreants, on Thursday night at Khyndailad.

In a statement issued by Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtnger, he said that a case has been registered in Shillong Sadar Police Station and investigation has been taken up. During the course of investigation, the Special Cell, East Khasi Hills along with the help of Guwahati City Police nabbed the five persons from Assam’s Guwahati.

The two persons who were assaulted have been identified as Bashai Syiem (25) hailing from Mawpdang and Iohborlang Kharsohnoh (27) of Jongksha.

Earlier today, taxi drivers’ association operating at Khyndailad, served the police one day’s time to arrest the culprits involved in the assault of the taxi drivers.

The association warned of repercussion if the police fail to arrest the culprits in one day. According to them, they will no longer allow non-local taxi drivers to operate at Khyndailad, aside from resorting to other measures if authorities fail to act on their demands.

However, following the arrest of the five individuals within the deadline, the association assured to resume the local taxi service from Saturday.
